Damn Klondike

Why is Klondike so addictive when it's not particularly rewarding to win?

Doesn't anyone get addicted to Klondike (solitaire) like I do? I've given it way too much thought and I think it's the sense of progress I get when stacking the cards up in the right order. I crave progress and order (challenges in this dissertation endeavor). Kind of funny that I can get them from a silly game that really accomplishes very little (certainly nothing on my dissertation).

I have a similar addiction to Spider Solitare, and have had since about this time last year (it all started around the time I began working on writing the thesis). Your theory about making progress makes some sense to me, but I don't have any ideas about how to translate my "progress" with solitare into progress on writing my silly paper. Sigh.

I thought you meant the ice cream bar! Or the gold rush.

Mmm, I'd probably like the ice cream bar even more than the card game. Better not get into those! I suppose the gold rush is addictive to some... next year I'll strike it rich, darnit! Well, for any of you who may be Klondike virgins...STAY AWAY!
