Probably the last rattler of the season

This beauty and another one just like it were in the trail as I hiked back to my car on Wednesday. Blacktail rattlesnake. The other one kept advancing toward me (very unsettling and very un-rattlesnake-like behavior). I couldn't get around it and we did this little dance for 15 minutes before it finally retreated very unhurridly. Now it's cooling off so they're probably thinking about burrows.

Way cool.

What a pretty snake. I think the black-tails were the kind we saw in New Mexico. They were usually pretty calm.

Whoa. Do you have a zoom lens on your camera?

Yes! I wasn't nearly as close as it looks!

Sally killed a garter snake this week. Bad dog - I saw it, but thought it was safely under the porch - then a couple minutes later it was dead. I'll start putting them in the neighbors yard when I see them.
