Some of that has been because I have been at a loss as to what to say. I finished my degree in August, but nothing much has happened since then as I've waited to hear on the things I've applied for and I've been a bit discouraged. However, at the end of last week I finally got some good news. I was awarded two years of postdoctoral funding from NSF to work on a project in Germany. I will be at the University of Heidelberg (I can't wait until I know how to spell that so I can stop looking it up every time I type it). The funding is for two years and it looks like I will be starting in late June. I'm still in excited mode about this (which will soon turn into a panic as I deal with all the details including moving to another country for a significant amount of time). Many of you heard about this on facebook, but I wanted to make sure that I updated everyone on my status since I've been so out of touch recently. Anyway, I'm open to advice from anyone who has lived abroad, and particularly in Europe (I lived 3 months in Japan and 3 months in Korea so I have some idea, but still, this is much longer).

I hope all is well you you guys!Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916407752990787580noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-66013995882536781722013-01-27T17:54:00.004-06:002013-01-27T17:54:56.701-06:00What cereal are you?Hello all...

So sorry the ol' blog is so slow and I certainly haven't been helping. I am enrolled in a teacher certification program now (HS biology teacher!) and my first assignment is to come up with a one-word cereal name that reflects some important attribute about me and design a cereal box. I am stumped. 'Comprendo-O's?' 'Mommix?' 'Puffed Science?' Well, that's two words...

What would your cereal be, or do you just think this is a ridiculous exercise? (My respect for the exercise has grown as I have tried to come up with something.)Tucson Trekkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05108557417394270596noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-71220587957660575362012-09-05T11:38:00.000-05:002012-09-05T11:38:32.404-05:00Deans in pjsThought I would update you on my new teaching job.

The dean of my dept. lives in the same place as me - we've seen each other in pjs (and politely hurriedly passed each other in the hallway).

When I used a projector for teaching they had to turn on power to the entire building.

I can't tell what are the first and what are the last names of my students.

I can get dressed 15 minutes before class and run downstairs to teach.

At graduation many Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston songs were played.

I have to work with a fan sitting 1 ft away from my face (and sleep with 2 at night).

There seems to be only one chalk board eraser for the entire floor of classrooms.

Students wander in 40 minutes late.

They physically ousted the former academic dean a couple years ago (so I will be careful to not make too many waves).

I have difficulty understanding what they are saying.

Yikes! I need help with what to teach - does anyone have a syllabus they can share? Recommendations for text books? The students can't afford books, but the dean said there are kindles for them to share and she'll buy me the text and kindle uploads. Right now they copy the pertinent chapters from the books and share the copies. I'll teach in exchange for room and board - no salary, so I'm trying to figure that part out. Haiti's only botanical garden is there! It's a coastal town! They allow cats in the guest house! I don't have to cook! Check my facebook for the latest person I friended and you might be able to see her pics. I'll post more details on facebook when I get there (late Aug).

I join your ranks as anonymous poster of teaching conundrums. All your posts will be a great resource as I figure this out!salsishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18092522513020464564noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-83436430471503901822012-07-23T20:28:00.000-05:002012-07-23T20:28:01.838-05:00Long belated check inHey all,
I know that I've been really out of touch for a least a year now...maybe longer. I got out of the habit of checking this blog regularly and have just been busy trying to finish things off. Today I finally defended my thesis (successfully) and I have just minor edits to make to the dissertation before turning it in (my committee actually signed off on the final draft already). I'm finally done and will be leaving OSU in less than a month to go home to Chicago and figure out what to do next.
I apologize for being out of touch and missing birthdays and other important news, I am going to try to get back into the habit of visiting the blog more often and keeping in touch.
I hope all is well with everyone!Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916407752990787580noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-28252569335580414472012-07-23T14:22:00.000-05:002012-07-23T14:22:05.664-05:00Dr. Abby!Congratulations to Abby!!!Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17392353864934026631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-66065302891822433152012-06-15T13:06:00.000-05:002012-06-15T13:06:07.634-05:00RIP GuabaI said goodbye to Guaba this morning. his & Yoda's baby photos. My housemate will keep him fed while I'm gone. But
next weekend might be the big decision.
He's really skinny, and has something growing in his sinus that we were keeping under control with antibiotic shots. But the past week it's grown and is making his eye swell shut. He still acts normal, just slower. Just wanted to update everyone about little Guaba.
And a pie within a cakeSunday I go to Haiti for two weeks to visit my friend Rhoda who does ag work though a veterinarian place near the capitol. Yay, a new adventure! The old place was getting too routine and safe so I wanted to shake it up a bit with a place with will probably be unbearably humid and hot and crowded and dirty and I could possibly be mugged (see her coworker's post about being mugged). I'm assuming Rhoda lives out in the country a couple miles from Port au Prince. She really hasn't given me any instructions other than she'll pick me up at the airport and she wants to go to bookstores. I'll teach ecology and I made 'save the bird' buttons to hand out - I'll post pictures on my blog when I get to it.

In the meantime, this might be my new favorite blog (other than Chuck of the day picture on dooce): see the blogger's adventure of baking a pie within a cake.salsishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18092522513020464564noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-64332616224924426772012-02-28T16:31:00.002-06:002012-02-28T16:44:28.093-06:00So that's why I feel so blehhSo I've been feeling blehh the last few days. There are some normal reasons for this (behind at work, not enough sleep, paperwork annoyances, spring allergies, very strangely hurt left calf [I think I pulled it. While walking. Twice in two weeks.] . . . ) but this seemed disproportionately bleeh. Wanting to ball up a cry blehhh.
Blehhh so that I seriously started wondering about how possible it would be I am pregnant or if I really needed to seek some medication even though I thought the post-partum stuff (which lasted over 5 months) was gone.
Just now I learned of another explanation.
Same explanation as here . (the time I had PMS-like-symptoms that I thought were weaning and I pointed out that there are other things that cause PMS-like-symptoms and you thought I was pregnant or had cancer).
I'm actually somewhat delighted-- while I never used to have PMS (or MS) that made me ball up and cry-- it means that there is a simple logical explanation and that it will pass. It also totally freaked me out because I have had maybe 4 periods since October 2008 and I'm totally unprepared. There are no pads in my office and I sat here staring at a tampon, "I think I can use that thing."
Anyway, hope you all are well.Sparkling Squirrelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899640164757220074noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-59118614142189321062012-02-22T14:04:00.003-06:002012-02-22T14:07:59.460-06:00improved blog templatesI was wondering why everyone had nice looking blogspot blogs. I am looking for book suggestions-- I recently finished reading the Harry Potter books to my grandmother and she really loved them. Now I am looking for a new book or book series to read to her. She really seems to enjoy mysteries, detective stories, and history, but I'm open to most anything so long as it isn't too violent or R-rated. Any suggestions?Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18117106761528614800noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-27564981387012274432011-11-24T17:57:00.002-06:002011-11-24T17:59:21.888-06:00Birthday WeekOnce again, it is the week (basically) when Irene, Jennifer and Jenny all age one year. As usual, it is also the week of Thanksgiving and a week that I will forget them if I don't post all at once.
Happy Birthday ladies! May you have (or I hope you had) a fantastic day followed by a fabulous year.Sparkling Squirrelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899640164757220074noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233715669196324514.post-64650256731583490872011-11-17T17:15:00.003-06:002011-11-17T17:31:27.261-06:00Breaking radio silence to be gauche!

Hello knitters...

It's good to drop in on the blog now and see you all again, familiar from knitting of yore, yet with new lives and families sprouting up. I'm doing well and loving being a mom (most of the time).

OK -- that's the breaking radio silence part... now for the gauche part -- I have a request.

I'm tutoring now and don't have the recent edition of Campbell, which I would find very helpful. Before I shell out $150 for it I thought I'd ask if any of you with real jobs might have an extra desk copy I could beg, borrow, or -- well, not steal! If not, I'll think about whether to remain 2 editions behind or shell out the big bucks!

Here's a recent pic of Andrew. We're not making it out to Lawrence this winter but hope to again next summer.
